Explain the JavaScript event loop: call stack, microtasks, and macrotasks.
JavaScript runs one call stack. When the stack is empty, the engine first drains microtasks — promise then/catch, queueMicrotask — then it takes one macrotask like setTimeout, I/O, or a UI event. That is why Promise.resolve().then(...) runs before setTimeout(fn, 0). I have used that as a live demo in interviews. If I keep queueing microtasks forever, I starve rendering and timers. In the browser, paint usually happens between macrotasks. I would not say 'the event loop is async'. I would say stack, then microtasks, then macrotasks, with that Promise versus timeout example.
Order: setTimeout 0, Promise.then, sync log?
Sync, then microtask then, then timeout. I would not say timeout is faster because zero. queueMicrotask groups with then.
How can microtasks starve the UI?
Endless then() chains never reach paint. Yield with a macrotask. Await is not a thread. A tight CPU loop still blocks.
Node loop versus browser?
Same idea, different phases. I do not assume paint in Node. Promise versus setTimeout still helps. I would not recite libuv unless they are a Node team.
Where does await sit in the loop?
Continuation is a microtask after the promise fulfills. The function yields. Await does not block the event loop. A CPU loop inside async still does.
How do you stay updated on Event Loop changes in JavaScript?
Follow release notes, RFCs or PEPs, official blogs, and reputable courses. Experiment in side projects when new Event Loop-related features ship so you can speak confidently about migration paths.
What testing approach works best for Event Loop logic in JavaScript?
Table-driven tests, property-based tests for invariants, and benchmarks for hot paths. Mock external I/O but keep core Event Loop logic pure where possible so tests remain fast and reliable.
What documentation would you consult when working with Event Loop in JavaScript?
Use the official JavaScript docs for Event Loop, language or framework references, and reputable community guides. Bookmark release notes and migration guides when upgrading versions, since Event Loop behavior can change between releases.
What is a common beginner mistake when learning Event Loop?
Copying snippets without understanding why Event Loop works leads to fragile code. Beginners often skip error handling, tests, or edge cases. Slow down, trace execution step by step, and validate assumptions with small experiments.
Which JavaScript syntax or standard-library tools are most useful for Event Loop?
Connect Event Loop to concrete types, concurrency primitives, or library modules. Cite a short example and when you would use it in production.
How should errors surface from code that implements Event Loop in JavaScript?
Describe exceptions or Result-style patterns as applicable to JavaScript. Propagate context, log carefully, and avoid masking failures in Event Loop.
What checks for Event Loop happen before runtime versus only at runtime in JavaScript?
Some Event Loop issues are caught by the compiler/linter; others appear with I/O or user input. That split drives tests and defensive coding.
How would you organize a small JavaScript package that owns Event Loop?
Separate public API from internals, name clearly, document, and unit test. Follow community package layout idioms for JavaScript.
What performance trap should juniors avoid when coding Event Loop in JavaScript?
Avoid premature optimization but know traps: excess allocations, blocking I/O on hot paths, or O(n²) algorithms. Profile before optimizing Event Loop.
How do you stay current on Event Loop changes in JavaScript?
Follow release notes, RFCs/PEPs, and official blogs. Try new Event Loop-related features in side projects before production migrations.
How would you introduce Event Loop to a new teammate joining a JavaScript project?
Start with the problem Event Loop solves, show a minimal working example, and list the team conventions around it. Point them at official docs and one trusted internal example rather than random snippets.
Why does solid understanding of Event Loop matter for day-to-day JavaScript work?
Event Loop shows up often in production JavaScript work—misunderstanding it leads to bugs, performance issues, or security gaps. Interviewers want clear explanations plus practical judgment.
Give a concrete production-style scenario that uses Event Loop in JavaScript.
Describe scaffolding a feature, configuring defaults, or validating input where Event Loop is required. Call out what goes wrong if the team skips conventions around it.
What learning path would you follow to get productive with Event Loop quickly?
Read the official overview, run a minimal sandbox, learn key terms and common errors, then expand with a small project. Hands-on practice beats memorizing Event Loop definitions.
How would you describe the business value of Event Loop without heavy jargon?
Frame Event Loop as improving reliability, speed, security, or maintainability. Use a product outcome analogy, then note how JavaScript engineers apply Event Loop to deliver that outcome.
Which docs and references would you keep open while working on Event Loop in JavaScript?
Official JavaScript documentation for Event Loop, language/framework references, and reputable guides. Track release notes because Event Loop behavior can change between versions.
How would you architect a large JavaScript system that depends heavily on Event Loop?
Define clear ownership boundaries for Event Loop, failure domains, caching, and observability. Plan capacity, multi-region needs if relevant, and explicit trade-offs between consistency, latency, and cost.
What are the highest-impact security risks for Event Loop in JavaScript, and how do you mitigate them?
Map the Event Loop attack surface (injection, broken auth, data exposure, DoS). Layer defenses—validation, rate limits, least privilege, encryption, and regular audits.
What practical production concern should you discuss for Event Loop in JavaScript (scenario 1)?
Cover correctness, failure modes, observability, and operational ownership for Event Loop in JavaScript. Scenario 1 should include a concrete metric and a rollback or mitigation plan.
What practical production concern should you discuss for Event Loop in JavaScript (scenario 2)?
Cover correctness, failure modes, observability, and operational ownership for Event Loop in JavaScript. Scenario 2 should include a concrete metric and a rollback or mitigation plan.
