How is a Microsoft software-engineer interview usually structured?
Microsoft is coding plus, for experienced hires, a design or architecture conversation, plus as-appropriate behavioral. They care that the code works, that I test it, and that I do not freeze when they change a constraint. I would prepare two stories: one system I shipped, and one production bug I owned. Azure questions show up if the team is cloud-heavy. Level changes the design depth — 64 plus is more systems — but every level still needs working code. I would talk through tests and edge cases instead of only the happy path.
Microsoft loop versus Amazon?
Coding, design, behavioral, often as-appropriate and a hiring manager. Amazon weights LPs more explicitly. I still use STAR at Microsoft. I would not treat Microsoft as easy Amazon. Level changes design depth.
Typical Microsoft coding round?
One or two problems, talk-aloud, edge cases, working-ish code. I test with an example. I ask input size. I would not skip brute force if I am stuck. Clean names matter.
Time you helped a teammate?
STAR: intern blocked on a test, we paired, they merged, I wrote a wiki so the next intern did not need me. Help plus a result. I would not take their credit or do their whole job.
Why Microsoft without only saying Azure?
A product I use, a team problem, Company → Role → You. If I apply to Azure I should have used a service. Generic Microsoft praise is easy to spot.
