What does Google look for in a software engineer interview besides coding?
Besides coding, Google looks at how I think out loud and how I work with people. In coding I would still write a working solution, say the complexity, and mention tests and edge cases instead of going silent after the happy path. For L4 and above there is usually a design loop: I would state requirements, sketch API and data, pick scale numbers, and talk tradeoffs, not jump to Kafka. Googleyness for me means I can disagree without being a jerk, I take feedback in the interview, and I do not pretend I know a product trivia fact I do not know. I would prepare one STAR story with a metric, because they still ask behavioral even if the loop is 'coding heavy'.
What does Googleyness mean with a real story?
Helpful without being asked, argue with data, not a jerk when I am right. I disagreed on a design, wrote a one-pager with measurements, accepted the call, still helped ship. I would not say I love innovation with no story.
Typical Google SWE loop?
Several coding rounds, design at L4+, Googleyness/behavioral. I clarify, talk aloud, test, give complexity. I would not sit silent. Process answers should be factual.
You do not know the coding question immediately. What do you do?
Restate, example, brute force, then optimize. I would rather a correct n log n I can code than a broken linear. They can ask me to improve after. Stuck protocol is Googleyness plus coding.
Why Google, not only the brand?
A product or paper I used, and the problem type I want — scale, infra — mapped to a team family. I would not say the cafeteria. Company → Role → You with Google-specific proof.
