Question

How should you answer Amazon's leadership-principle questions?

Answer:

I would map every behavioral question to a Leadership Principle and answer in STAR, with I not we. Customer Obsession, Ownership, Dive Deep, Bias for Action, Deliver Results, and Have Backbone come up a lot. A sample I would actually say: Situation — checkout errors jumped 20 percent before a sale. Task — I owned the orders API on-call. Action — I pulled dashboards, found a timeout to inventory, added a retry with idempotency, and wrote the postmortem. Result — errors dropped, and we kept the sale. That is Ownership plus Dive Deep. I keep 8 to 10 stories I can remap. I do not badmouth teammates. If I failed, I say what I changed next sprint.

Question 2

Question

One LP that is not Customer Obsession, with STAR.

Answer:

Dive Deep: latency spike, I traced pool wait, errors down 25 percent. Or Bias for Action: reduced v1 instead of missing a campaign. I prepare 6–8 remappable stories, not 16 unique epics.

Question 3

Question

Customer Obsession as a backend engineer?

Answer:

A user-visible metric: checkout timeouts, duplicate orders. I name the buyer, not the internal platform, unless the customer really is an internal team — then I name that team and their pain.

Question 4

Question

Earn Trust without sounding fake?

Answer:

I was wrong, I said so, I added a test gate after a missed deadline. Trust is when people can predict me. A modest specific story survives follow-ups. A speech about integrity does not.

Question 5
Interview Beginner
Question

How many LP stories should you prepare?

Answer:

Six to eight stories I can remap. Same incident can be Dive Deep and Deliver Results. I practice two-minute STAR: failure, conflict, customer, deliver-under-time.
