Question 1
Interview Intermediate
Question

What is 'Have Backbone; Disagree and Commit' and how would you answer it?

Answer:

It means I disagree with data when it matters, then I fully execute the decision even if it was not my idea. A story I would tell: we were about to ship a feature that wrote to the DB on every keystroke. I thought that would melt the primary. I raised it with a rough QPS number and proposed debounce plus a queue. The lead still wanted the simpler write for v1. I disagreed in the review, then I committed — I shipped v1, added metrics, and we hit the limit I predicted. We put the queue in v2 the next sprint. I did not sabotage v1. I also did not stay silent. That is the LP. The failure mode is either never speaking, or quietly refusing to build the agreed path.

Question 2
Interview Intermediate
Question

Disagreed, lost, still committed.

Answer:

I wanted more tests, PM wanted the date, we cut scope, I shipped the reduced v1 and did not sabotage, then I added the gate. The commit half is what people skip.

Question 3
Interview Advanced
Question

What if the decision is unsafe?

Answer:

I would not commit to illegal or unsafe. I escalate. Disagree and Commit is for taste and priority, not known data leaks. The ethical boundary is a senior follow-up.

Question 4
Interview Intermediate
Question

Disagree with a manager in writing?

Answer:

A one-pager: decision, data, recommendation, and that I will follow the call. Once, not every standup. After the call I execute. I would not CC skip-level to win.

Question 5
Interview Beginner
Question

Have Backbone versus stubborn?

Answer:

Backbone is speaking once with data, then letting the decision land. Stubborn is repeating after the call. Quiet people can have backbone in a doc. Volume is not backbone.
